stocked shelves
hanover healthfoods has a policy of keeping abreast of the constantly changing supplement market and stocking our shelves with variety and quality. We like to keep ourselves and our customers as up-to-date as possible with the latest developments and it is on this page that we will reflect what is in the news.

hanover healthfoods goes to Olympia In mid-April five members of staff from hanover healthfoods will attend the Natural Products Expo at Olympia, London. This is a great opportunity to learn, ask questions of manufacturers, and to source new products. Watch the shelves!

Nuts are good for you! Recent reports in the Sunday Telegraph have said that almonds and hazelnuts could have benefits beyond the minerals and essential fatty acids they contain. Almonds have been found to have a particularly high level of antioxidants, and hazelnuts contain low levels of a chemical similar to the anti-cancer drug Taxol. We believe that nuts and seeds are under consumed and that many people could benefit from a more varied diet including them.

Olive oil may reduce high blood pressure. A small study at the University of Naples found that hypertensive patients administered olive oil over a generally low fat diet found that they needed less blood pressure medication than a group taking sunflower oil. The difference may be the presence of mono-unsaturated fatty acids in the olive oil as against poly-unsaturated fatty acids in the sunflower oil.

Beta blockers may increase risk of diabetes. A large randomized study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that there may be some link between this common group of drugs and developing adult-onset diabetes. People taking these drugs should consider reducing other risk factors for diabetes (obesity, lack of exercise). A diet rich in Chromium may also help insulin to work better.

Package warnings for St John's Wort finalised. The Medicine's Control Agency (MCA) has finalised a warning to appear on the packaging of all products containing the herb. This has come about after concerns emerged over possible interactions some prescription medication. Basically it warns the customer to consult their doctor or pharmacist before using St John's Wort as it may cause interactions. We would support this and we would like all our customers to tell us and their GPs what nutrients, herbs, and drugs they are taking in order that we can all make informed recommendations. However, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England and Wales, Dr Pat Troop recently said 'St John's Wort when taken alone, and with many drugs, causes no harm.'

Concerns about interactions can be checked on-line at www.IBISmedical.com/Interactions.html or at www.healthnotes.com. The healthnotes online CD-ROM is available from hanover healthfoods, both to buy and to consult in store.
